Student’s Perception on Online Classes During Lockdown Period in Burdwan University in West Bengal

ABSTRACT:
The world is facing today the biggest public health risk that is COVID 19, leads to the situation of closure of primary, secondary, higher secondary and higher education institutions and transition towards online teaching in a very swift way that it gave hardly any time to plan. During this social distancing and lockdown period, numbers of universities offered their massive open online courses free to the students; online classes started sharing academic resources. Online class is a type of educational instruction that is delivered via internet to students using their computer and smart phones. This paper has focused on whether perception of rural and urban region, male and female students, rural male and urban male, rural female and urban female, rural male and rural female, urban male and urban female make any difference in online classes. In this paper researcher has also tried to find out the mean value of advantages and disadvantages of online classes.

INTRODUCTION:
The world today is facing the biggest public health risk which is leading to one of the largest and the quickest reorganization of the world order. A pandemic has spread over 185 countries. As a result, over 90 percent of school, colleges and universities are facing challenges to run their institution and approximately 1.38 billion students are being deprived of their education (Misra 2020). In India central government declared a country wise lockdown of school and colleges on 16th March 2020. A sudden hit of Pandemic COVID 19 leads to the situation of closure of primary, secondary, higher secondary and higher education institutions and transition to online teaching very swiftly that it hardly gave any time to plan.
Online teaching and learning is a type of educational instruction that is delivered via internet to students using their computer and smart phones. During the last decade, online degrees and courses become popular alternative for a wide range of non- traditional students include those who want to continue working full time or raising families. Online teaching and learning which is trending now a days because of COVID 19. Many schools, colleges and universities are trying to connect with students with online classes. Today’s generation has very much dependent on technology because technology provides huge benefits like it consumes less time, money and labour. With the help of online classes it becomes possible to save study time. It is not possible to every student to buy different books on different topics or same topic due to high price of the books. But by the help of online classes learner can easily access journals, articles, books, online videos and lectures from all over the world without wasting the time and money. Online classes can reduce the study load by simplifying subject or the topics. Not only that it uses all the five sense organ of human beings and fulfils curiosity expands knowledge and gives virtual experiences. By this way online classes can save the time.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:
During this lockdown online teaching and learning becomes the only way of interactive platform for teacher and learners and it is now very popular all over the world in the field of education because online classes give the e-learning material to the students, so student’s interest on the particular topic becomes increased. On the other hand, it takes less time of student to understand the topic. It makes an effect on the knowledge level, understanding level, application level and skill level development.
By using technology the teaching-learning process become more attractive and effective in the present day. This study has conducted to find out the difference on perception of online classes in rural and urban students, male and female students, rural male and urban male, rural female and urban female, rural male and rural female, urban male and urban female. So that, it can brings about the necessary changes into the students learning environments.
OBJECTIVES: In this paper researcher wants to-
· Find out the mean value of disadvantages and advantages of online classes.
· Find out the differences on perception of online classes in rural and urban students.
· Find out the difference on perception of online classes in male and female students.
· Find out the difference on perception of online classes in rural male and urban male students.
· Find out the difference on perception of online classes in rural female and urban female students.
· Find out the difference on perception of online classes in rural male and rural female students.
· Find out the difference on perception of online classes in urban male and urban female students.
RESEARCH QUESTION:
What are the mean value of disadvantages and advantages of online classes?
HYPOTHESIS:
H1 There is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural and urban students.
H2 There is no significance difference on perception of online classes in male and female students.
H3 There is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural male and urban male students.
H4 There is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural female and urban female students.
H5 There is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural male and rural female students.
H6 There is no significance difference on perception of online classes in urban male and urban female students.
METHODOLOGY:
Population: Under Graduate and Post Graduate students of department of Education of Burdwan University.
Sample size: Twenty-two Under Graduate and Post Graduate students of department of Education of Burdwan University have taken.
Method: Descriptive survey method has been used.
Sampling technique: Purposive sampling technique has been used.
Tool: Self made 5 point scale questionnaire has been used by the researcher.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS:
Data has been collected by the help of Google form during lockdown.
· After collection of data researcher has found the mean value of disadvantages and advantages of online classes are 2.18 and 3.3 which indicates that students are agreed to disadvantages of online classes and neutral to advantages of online classes.
· To see whether the differences on perception of online classes in Burdwan University students are significant or not researcher has to test the hypothesis. Researcher has done t test for testing null hypothesis. Computed value of t test is given below in table 1.

H1 =Critical value of t at 5% and 1% level of significance is 2.20 and 2.71 respectively. The computed value of t in rural and urban students is 0.63 which is quite smaller than the critical table value 2.20 and 2.71, hence is not significant. Hence, null hypothesis cannot be rejected. It means there is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural and urban students.
H2 = Value of t at 5% and 1% level of significance is 2.09 and 2.86 respectively. The computed value of t in male and female students is 0.38 which is quite smaller than the critical table value 2.09 and 2.86, hence is not significant. Hence, null hypothesis cannot be rejected. It means there is no significance difference on perception of online classes in male and female students.
H3 = Critical value of t at 5% and 1% level of significance is 2.78 and 4.60 respectively. The computed value of t in rural male and urban male students is 0.866 which is quite smaller than the critical table value 2.78 and 4.60, hence is not significant. Hence, null hypothesis cannot be rejected. It means there is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural male and urban male students.
H4 = Critical value of t at 5% and 1% level of significance is 2.14 and 2.98 respectively. The computed value of t in rural female and urban female students is 1.188 which is quite smaller than the critical table value 2.14 and 2.98, hence is not significant. Hence, null hypothesis cannot be rejected. It means there is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural female and urban female students.
H5 = Critical value of t at 5% and 1% level of significance is 2.20 and 3.11 respectively. The computed value of t in rural male and rural female students is 0.375 which is quite smaller than the critical table value 2.20 and 3.11, hence is not significant. Hence, null hypothesis cannot be rejected. It means there is no significance difference on perception of online classes in rural male and rural female students.
H6 = Critical value of t at 5% and 1% level of significance is 2.45 and 3.71 respectively. The computed value of t in urban male and urban female students is 0.967 which is quite smaller than the critical table value 2.45 and 3.71, hence is not significant. Hence, null hypothesis cannot be rejected. It means there is no significance difference on perception of online classes in urban male and urban female students.
RESULT:
Students are agreed to disadvantages of online classes and on the other hand 50% students agree and 50% students are not agreed with the advantages. The difference of perception of online classes in rural and urban, male and female, rural male and urban male, rural female and urban female, rural male and rural female, urban male and urban female students are negligible that means both are equal.
SUGGESSIONS:
Some important aspects are rises up from this work are given below
a. Network quality, accessibility, network speed should be increased in rural areas;
b. Study load should not be exceeding duo to overloading of contents.
c. Theory and practical classes both should be taken in online mode.
d. Plagiarism checking should include in home tasks and assessments.
CONCLUSION:
By using 5-point scale questionnaire on students of Burdwan university, researcher has come to know that the mean value of disadvantages and advantages of online classes are 2.18 and 3.3 which indicates that students are agreed to disadvantages of online classes and on the other hand 50% students agree and 50% students are not agree with the advantages. The difference of perception of online classes in rural and urban, male and female, rural male and urban male, rural female and urban female, rural male and rural female, urban male and urban female students are negligible that means both are equal.
